Our Daily Veggies

“Right now I cannot buy fruits or vegetables for my girls to eat because I lost my job as a housekeeper. Thanks to the box of food, my girls get to eat more healthy food, which they enjoy, and we don’t stay hungry.” - Mom who received a Produce Box

COVID-19: Adapting to Meet the Need

Britepaths has modified the Our Daily Veggies program for 2020 to respond to the COVID-19 crisis in our community and the fact that social distancing guidelines have changed how we shop at farmers markets, making it difficult to implement our traditional voucher system.

In 2020, Britepaths is collaborating with the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture through a grant from the Northern Virginia Health Foundation to provide vouchers that doctors write as “prescriptions” to families they see in the Route 1 area of Fairfax County who are food insecure and are directly and indirectly affected by COVID-19. In many cases, someone in the household may have the virus or they may be quarantined because of exposure.

Through this partnership, produce boxes containing a variety of fruits and vegetables will be delivered to families identified as having need. Britepaths is supporting this initiative through funds we budgeted for our traditional Our Daily Veggies voucher program. We are not directly involved in distributing the boxes, and are not seeking volunteers to implement this program.

We are grateful to our partners in this initiative! Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture, Northern Virginia Health Foundation (NVHF) and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) Community Outreach Team, which is working in partnership with Emmanuel Worship Center and Sequoyah-Opportunity Neighborhood, part of Fairfax County's Neighborhood and Community Services.

About the Traditional Our Daily Veggies Program

For the past 10 years, Britepaths' traditional Our Daily Veggies Farmers Market Voucher Program provided vouchers to our clients from May through November so they could purchase fresh produce and protein products from participating vendors at Fairfax County area Farmers Markets.

You Can Still Support Our Daily Veggies Vendors!

We are sad that we will not be connecting with our Our Daily Veggies vendors this year. Many of them have been helping make this program possible since the beginning. Many are still bringing their produce and products to Northern Virginia markets in adherence to social distancing guidelines, or offering CSA shares. Please seek them out and shop with them if you're able.
